Painting in mixed media and collaging with papers and found objects gives me a chance to build upon a surface to reorganize a work from chaos to order. Construction of another world from the old one intrigues the eye. Watermedia paints, mediums and surface textures lend themselves to this process and allow a building of paintings that reflect the changes from old to new to old again. An inveterate collector of things, shapes, papers, or anything else that looks old, I like to ink, arrange, and print shapes from nature. Experimentation with materials and ideas leads to the creation of watermedia collage paintings, and monoprints. Writing of any kind reflects humanity's attempts to communicate an idea or theme. Sometimes personal writing may be used to create hand-made books. Other times another person's writing leads to painting a theme about those written words.
Color plays an important part in the artwork. What is the mood to be examined?
Some colors and shapes may suggest a new direction to interpret. This process can be very time consuming as I look for new shapes to emerge. An intuitive process is used. If the artwork begins as a preplanned one, it usually turns to an intuitive painting. Many times colors and papers are chosen ahead of time, while at other times a complementary palette is used. The artwork is always begun in a different way from before.
